Acupuncture:
What is it? Acupuncture is an ancient technique well over 2,000 years old. It is the insertion of very fine, flexible, sterile needles at specific points on the body. This is one of the most widely used tools in Chinese medicine.
How does it work? Acupuncture improves blood flow in the body, and by doing so, improves the function of the body’s vital organ systems. It stimulates the body to pay attention to the areas that need it the most.
Does it hurt? People experience many different sensations from acupuncture. Some say the insertion of the needle feels like a mosquito bite. Sometimes, you may not feel anything when the needle goes in. On very delicate areas like the ears, face, feet and hands, you may feel a slight sting that lasts for a very short time. I understand that everybody reacts to acupuncture differently, and adjust my techniques accordingly. I always encourage client feedback throughout the treatment and make sure they feel comfortable and safe.
Is it safe? Yes. When practiced by a trained professional acupuncture is safe. Needles are used once, then properly disposed.
Cosmetic Acupuncture
Cosmetic acupuncture is for the specific purpose of improving the visible appearance of the face and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The best results are achieved when people do a series of 3 treatments per week for 4 weeks.
Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is a powerful and effective drug-free modality used to promote better health and proper function in the body. Individual herbs are synergistically combined to create formulas that can have a dramatic effect on the body. These herbal formulas support, balance, harmonize and regulate the body and mind.
Fire Cupping
What is it? Fire is used to quickly burn the oxygen inside a glass cup which is then placed on the skin. The lack of oxygen inside the cup creates a vacuum that generate suction when placed on the skin. The cups may be left in one position on the body or slid across the skin to affect a larger area.
How does it work? This is a technique I often use to help people with tension, tight muscles and stagnation. It also helps to balance the internal organ systems.
Does it hurt? No – but it does feel strange at first! Many people feel great relief from tight muscles after cupping.
Is it safe? Yes. It is important to be aware that cupping can leave temporary purple or red marks on the skin from the suction. These can last anywhere from 1-7 days.
Tui Na
What is it? Tui na is a form of Chinese massage that includes stimulation of acupuncture points and energy pathways. I use tui na most often for musculoskeletal problems and to facilitate relaxation.
Moxabustion
What is it? Moxabustion is the burning of the herb Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). The practice of burning herbs and generating smoke to promote healing is used in many indigenous cultures. Moxa was burned in the cold climate of northern China to treat common conditions such as arthritis that were affected by the cold weather.
How does it work? Moxa is very warming, and can aid in healing conditions that are affected by cold weather. It is also very helpful for people who have sensations of cold, or a difficult time staying warm.
Is it safe? Yes.
Nutritional and Lifestyle Coaching
I feel that taking responsibility for one’s health is vital, however, many people feel confused about where to start. Through nutritional and lifestyle coaching that is tailored specifically to the individual, I guide people towards making healthy changes they can maintain. This includes discussion about living in accordance with one’s values and beliefs, appropriate goal setting, stress management, finding balance between work, play, family time, time alone, healthcare and more.
I offer coaching sessions as part of a comprehensive treatment plan including acupuncture and Chinese medicine, or as a stand-alone service.
Natural Cleansing & Weight Management
Our foods, our environment, our water and our air are becoming increasingly polluted. The body does its best to process these pollutants, but disease, stress, fatigue and a poor diet all make that job even more challenging. Just like we do a spring cleaning, or change the air filters in our car, the body occasionally needs a deeper cleansing too.
I use a safe and gentle 9-Day Cleansing Program that has proven to provide amazing results. People typically lose 7-9 pounds in the nine days – and keep it off.
This program helps the body move from an acidic state where detoxification cannot occur, to a more alkaline state where cells can release built up toxins. When toxins are introduced into the body, the body protects itself by building fat cells around the toxin to prevent it from causing harm. Through this 9-Day detoxification program, one can rid themselves of such toxins. Once they are gone, the fat cells surrounding them are no longer needed and body gets rid of these as well. To learn more, please ask me about the 9-Day Cleansing Program.
Healing Response offers a comprehensive weight management program that includes:
- An in-depth health history exam
- A 9-Day or 30-Day detoxification and cleanse
- Acupuncture treatments for improving metabolism, digestion, and immune function, as well as helping to control hunger, anxiety and food cravings
- Herbal formulas and supplements that help address the underlying imbalances that can lead to weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Nutritional coaching and goal setting
